Joshua S. Zaring, Producer/Engineer/Musician
It all started with guitar, then singing, bass
and drums and from there music has been my life. I decided instead of
going to school for art (my original first love) I wanted to learn more
about capturing musical performances since I have also been a musician since
age 15. During my time at
Recording Connection I started developing
my own style of recording and mixing. My way of analyzing other recordings
and figuring out what I could possibly do to improve them, not just
re-equalizing, but analyzing every instrument with my ears (being picky) and
determining what was done wrong. Mic placement, choosing the right mic,
where everyone is strategically placed in the in the room, the size of
the room, bad eq moves, too much compression, the list goes on and on. All
this preparation was targeted at NEVER leaving a bad sounding recording
leave the room. Since going into business, I have learned far more than I
ever could have learned in recording school, but school definitely helped me
on my way. Being a musician definitely helps when you become an engineer,
why would I let a bad mix represent who I am as well as representing the
reputation of your talent. I'm not the type of guy that says it sounds great
just because I want to rush through the whole process and get it done.
Like most other engineers, I started out with a 4-track cassette based
recorder and gradually added to my studio piece by piece. Keeping up with
technology at it's speedy pace is what makes all the difference. Constant
reading, comparing products and learning to use it all before it becomes
obsolete. Right now the studio may not look like the "Big Guys" but I have
everything I need and nothing I don't to get the best sound possible. Some
people just need to show how much money they have rather than impress you
with how good they can make you sound. Years later, Zaring Productions is at
the cutting edge with unlimited tracks and
an engineer who cares about the quality of your music as much as you
do.
